I Admire My Anxiety: From Dana

Dear September, I am Dana, 14 years old. I am someone who deals with a lot of anxiety in my everyday life. I know someone needs this just like I did, so I decided to write a September letter. When I realized I had anxiety, I was scared. I didn’t know what to do or how to deal with it. I’m one of those people who just keep it to themselves but then I realized, thats not going to help me. I now admire my anxiety and try to value it. I see the world differently. This whole pandemic messed everyone up, but it also helped people in many ways. I am one of many who have anxiety but I don’t let it stop me and neither should you. I always try to remember that, you don’t have to pretend your okay if your not. I know that times get scary and you feel like your at the bottom, but your not. Your still learning and don’t let anyone make you feel differently. Its good to be different and its definitely okay to have emotions. I used to get bullied and I’m gonna be honest, it sucked. But I used them to encourage me and to make me feel proud of who I am. Im grateful for my anxiety because it turned me into the person I am today. Im still 14 and I still love myself. Even if I have thought differently in the past. Thank you for your time and remember to love yourself!
If you need help say something. You are loved and appreciated even if it doesn’t seem like it.
Sincerely, Dana

  2. Dear Dana,
Your words of encouragement are a gift brimming with honesty and compassion, not just for yourself but for others too.
I too have lived with anxiety for 63 years, my entire life. But I love what you said about valuing your anxiety. Indeed, I’ve learned a lot from learning how to live with the discomfort and challenges of anxiety, but for certain it has helped me to be more compassionate toward others and myself.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and grace with others like me!
    Sincerely,
    A Friend

We understand we sometimes need more support than writing and reading letters. We all experience hard times. But you are not alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, there are many forms of support. If you or a loved one is in immediate danger, call 911. It is important to notify the operator that it is a psychiatric emergency and ask for an officer trained to assist people experiencing a psychiatric emergency.
